DIY Lip Balm – Just Like Burt’s Bees!

I’ll be the first to admit that I have a chapstick addiction.  My favorite kind is Burt’s Bees, but at $3 a stick, it can get pretty pricey.  So a while back I went on a hunt for a recipe that was similar to Burt’s Bees.  I found it at The Ponte Vedra Soap Shoppe and then I adapted it a little to suit my preferences.

So, how does it add up price-wise? The cost savings of DIY lip balm compared to Burts Bees is significant, making it a more economical choice for all of us. When you compare the prices, Burts Bees lip balm costs $3 per stick, while DIY lip balm costs about 75 cents per stick, including the tube. But it gets even better – if you reuse the tubes, the cost goes down to about 10 cents per stick. That’s a huge difference!

Required Supplies for DIY Lip Balm

We also carry several of the supplies you’ll need to make it.  We have these stylish oval lip balm tubes, beeswax beads, coconut oil, almond oil, and rosemary and peppermint essential oils.  You’re also going to need a digital kitchen scale that allows you to measure less than an ounce.  

DIY Beeswax Lip Balm

Makes 20-25 tubes

1.5 oz beeswax beads*
1 oz coconut oil*
0.8 oz almond oil*
0.3 oz lanolin
1 tsp vitamin E oil
0.1 oz menthol crystals (optional, but gives that nice tingly feeling)
10 drops rosemary essential oil (I omitted this, but you don’t have to)*
3-4 drops (or to your liking) peppermint essential oil*

*These ingredients can be found in our store.

Put 1 to 1 1/2 inches of water in a small sauce pan and bring to a boil.  Put all the ingredients except the peppermint essential oil in a glass container that will fit into the sauce pan.  Place your glass container in the boiling water and allow the ingredients to melt.  Stir occasionally.  This will take 5-10 minutes.  Once melted, remove from boiling water and add peppermint essential oil.  Pour into lip balm tubes and allow to cool and harden.  This will make 20-25 tubes of lip balm.

Save
